PRODUCT DILIGENCE

How to verify a warehouse’s fit for your CPG products

Consumer packaged goods is a broad category. Build the diligence around the actual product, packaging, and handling requirements you need a warehouse to support.

Evidence to bring back

  • Prepare a SKU-level brief with product form, packaging, storage instructions, and any handling constraints supplied by the responsible people in your business.
  • Get written confirmation of the proposed location and the products it can accept.
  • Request a demonstration or documented walkthrough of the steps relevant to your product.

Bring these four things into the conversation
  1. SKU-level requirement brief
  2. Assigned-site acceptance
  3. Handling and record walkthrough
  4. Exclusions and change approval

Describe the product precisely

Prepare a SKU-level brief with product form, packaging, storage instructions, and any handling constraints supplied by the responsible people in your business. Include the information relevant to batch records, date management, or restricted products where applicable. Do not rely on a category such as beauty or supplements to communicate the entire operating requirement.

Ask for facility-specific acceptance

Get written confirmation of the proposed location and the products it can accept. If the provider describes a capability across its network, ask whether it applies to your assigned site and workflow. Clarify exclusions, additional setup, and who must approve changes to your assortment. Keep the response with the SKU brief it was based on, so future changes can be reviewed against the same record.

Inspect the handling workflow

Request a demonstration or documented walkthrough of the steps relevant to your product. These may include receipt, identification, storage, picking, packaging, and separation of uncertain stock. Ask where the relevant records are kept and who can retrieve them. Any safety, quality, or regulatory requirements should be confirmed by qualified advisers and the provider for the specific product and operation.

Document limits as carefully as capabilities

Record the cases the proposed service does not cover, including product changes, unusual returns, or special packaging work. Use those limits to define an escalation and approval process. A provider can be a sensible candidate while some requirements remain unresolved. The decision should show what is confirmed, what needs further evidence, and what the brand will retain responsibility for.
